How many community members will be required for each Committee?
18 community members. One City Councillor will be appointed to each committee.
What is the mandate of each of these Committees?
To provide guidance and advise to City Council, City departments, agencies, boards and commissions and act as a liaison with external bodies on barriers to participation in public life and to the achievement of social, cultural, and economic well-being of the City's residents.
Each Community Advisory Committee shall also address the specific issues facing particular communities, develop options for Council's consideration and make recommendations for positive changes that shall improve the quality of the lives of the members of the City's diverse communities.
What is the term of office?
The term for the initial appointments is until the end of the term of the next Council (Nov. 2003).
What is the process for appointing members to the Community Advisory Committees?
- Individuals are to attend an information seminar where applications will be made available. Completed applications should be submitted by the closing deadline.
- Nominations will be assessed according to eligibility criteria and individuals will be contacted for an interview.
- Successful candidates will be invited to an orientation session in the fall.
When can I expect to hear whether I have been chosen and when will the committees start meeting?
The interviews will be conducted in the early summer. Once the Nominating Committee has selected the successful candidates, a report will go before Toronto City Council.
How often will these committees meet and what will be my time commitment?
Each committee will meet four times a year. It is anticipated that each committee will set-up subcommittees or ad hoc working groups which would meet as required. Each meeting will be approximately three hours in length. The time required for subcommittee work would vary depending upon the committee.
What is the reporting structure for these Committees?
The Community Advisory Committees shall report to Toronto City Council through the Administration Committee, as well through the appropriate standing committees on issues within the mandates of the standing committee.
Is there any remuneration or assistance with expenses associated with attending these meetings?
Members are not financially compensated for their time. However in order to ensure that individuals can fairly and effectively attend, associated costs such as babysitting or travelling costs will be provided. Members who have special requirements such as ASL, attendant care, alternate format, language translation will be accommodated upon request.
