Housing is a Human Right |

 |
The City of Toronto, the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario and the Human Rights Legal Support Centre have joined forces in a public education campaign to promote Housing as Human Right and encourage people to learn more about exercising that right.
The City of Toronto is committed to equal and fair access to housing without discrimination as provided by the Ontario Human Rights Code. To support that principle, City Council has adopted the Toronto Housing Charter - Opportunity for All, a key component of the Housing Opportunities Toronto HOT Action Plan 2010-2020.
The Toronto Housing Charter is a first for Toronto and for Canada. It includes a number of principles which will guide City Council and staff as they make decisions concerning the provision of afford and supportive housing. These principles include:
- All residents should have a safe, secure, affordable and well-maintained home from which to realize their full potential.
- All residents should be able to live in their neighbourhood of choice without discrimination.
- All residents have the right to equal treatment in housing without discrimination as provided by the Ontario Human Rights Code, and to be protected from discriminatory practices which limit their housing opportunities.
