* * World Habitat Day in Toronto *
* *

The United Nations has designated the first Monday in October as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. The theme of this year’s World Habitat Day was “Cities and Climate Change.”

World Habitat Day 2011 was celebrated in a number of ways in the City of Toronto. As it has for the past two years, the City officially proclaimed UN World Habitat Day in Toronto on October 3, 2011.

Mayor Rob Ford raised the Habitat for Humanity flag at City Hall and presented the organization with a plaque in recognition of its contributions to Toronto. Habitat for Humanity presented the keys to a new home to its 206th family in Toronto. A report on the positive impact of Habitat's work on Toronto was also released.

Throughout the day at City Hall, SKETCH, an arts initiative for homeless and at risk youth, held a fundraiser with unique artwork for sale and on display. SKETCH demonstrated how arts and skill building workshops enrich the lives of street-involved youth.

Beginning at dusk, the City Hall towers were lit up in the green and blue colours of Habitat for Humanity.

The City’s affordable housing partners from the private and non-profit sectors and other governments, as well as other stakeholders and City staff attended the events. In addition, private sector affordable ownership developer Home Ownership Alternatives held a World Habitat Day event.
