For as long as there have been newspapers themselves, artists have used editorial cartoons to comment on the important issues and people of their day. These pen and ink drawings by Harold Southam Johnston, published in the Mail and Empire newspaper in 1929 and 1930, touch upon such perennial topics as urban development, the stock market, trade and tariffs, unemployment, civic elections, and the weather.
