Grade 5
Our Local Government

The City of Toronto Archives, in conjunction with the Toronto Urban Studies Centre, offers a program addressing the Grade 5 Social Studies curriculum, Aspects of Citizenship and Government in Canada.

At the Sesquicentennial Museum and Archives, students investigate significant aspects of local government.

Following a brief review of federal and provincial systems, students learn about Toronto and its municipal services.

In the afternoon, students visit the Toronto Archives to continue investigating the services provided

Grade 12
Archives and Local History


Designed to connect with the Grade 12 Interdisciplinary Studies curriculum course IDC4UI, Archives and Local History, this program addresses many of the issues found in Unit 1, Theory and Foundation of Local History and Archival Studies.

Students will:
  • tour a professional archives
  • examine and draw conclusions about primary documents
  • develop their own archival description entries
  • discover the role, purpose and focus of archivists
  • acquire research skills required for further projects
The recommended size of groups is 30 or less.

Other Grades

The City of Toronto Archives is also able to create themed tours and programs to complement many other areas of the Ontario curriculum in a range of subjects.

Recent tours have included Grade 7 and 9 geography students studying changes in the built environment within Toronto and surrounding their school, and Grade 8 and Grade 12 history students investigating immigration and demographic changes within the city.

  The Archives has also welcomed Grade 11 and 12 English Literature students, who have been reading In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje and Consolation by Michael Redhill.

These authors conducted much of the research for their novels using records at the City of Toronto Archives. Students
were given the opportunity to see some of the records and documents used by the author.
