City of Toronto Archives, SC 587-41; Gift of Willie Zimmerman

In 1909, the Broadview YMCA took control of the Broadview Boys' Institute. The BBI was organized in 1903 by C.J. Atkinson, who worried that Toronto's boys were going "sport mad." Atkinson promoted the concept of "industrial play" to foster vocational and business skills. An agricultural project created 84 "farms" on the BBI's property.
