BMW Toronto

Address: 11 Sunlight Park Road - Don Valley Expressway and Gardiner Expressway interchange
Architect: Quadrangle Architects Ltd.
Landscape Architect: The MBTW Group
Retail and Interior Design: Omniplan Automotive Retail Facility Planners
Client: BMW Canada Inc.

Project Description

This project includes the renovation of a six-storey office building, construction of a new two-storey service wing and extensive floodplain and environmental remediation.

The stacking of cars in a six storey "showroom in the sky" creates a sleek transparent "toy box" of cars. BMW has taken the automobile dealership and tipped it up vertically to create a distinctly urban form.

Jurors' Comments

An old soap factory was stripped down to its bare structural bones and refashioned into this spectacular and unusual showcase for luxury automobiles. Located at the important junction of the Don Valley Expressway and the Gardiner Expressway, this building celebrates its geographic place in the midst of urban car culture with flair and a touch of extravagance, while maintaining high environmental standards with regard to the Don River valley.
