EGLINTON SPECTRUM PUBLIC SCHOOL
EGLINTON SPECTRUM PUBLIC SCHOOL
223 Eglinton Ave. East

Architect: Teeple Architects Inc., Shore Tilbe Irwin and Partners - Architects in Joint Venture

Landscape Architect: Gunta Mackars Landscape Architecture
Owner: Toronto District School Board

The sensible distribution of building mass and land uses on the site are an expression of good urban design practice. The L-shaped structure anchors this corner site at a busy intersection and creates a safe and sunny schoolyard mid-block facing south and away from traffic.

Building facades that front onto the intersection could be better handled to make this community facility more welcoming and the adjacent streetscape more attractive to the pedestrian. However, accommodation of a transit stop with seating beneath cantilevered upper floors of this school is a practical, civic-minded gesture.

A translucent, perforated, formed plastic panel element was used creatively in multiples for the definition of exterior spaces, elegant signage and as a foil for night lighting. The element is a durable solution for a harsh roadside environment in an industrial district.

Effective identification for the passing vehicular traffic on Hwy 401 was achieved through the sign pylon and roof lantern. Jurors felt that the sign pylon could have been designed to a greater scale.
