Background
A five-year strategic action plan to enhance the competitiveness of the Bermondsey Employment Area as an attractive location for existing companies and a new generation of employers has been released. Reclaiming the Past - Moving into the Future represents over four months of community consultation and provides strategic directions to keep the employment area viable, competitive and remain an important part of the City's economic base.

The action plan provides an overview of the existing state of the Bermondsey Employment Area, a list of local issues and suggested solutions. In addition, the action plan recommends that the area stakeholders create a business association to bring together diverse interests operating in the community, to provide credibility for their initiatives and to provide an organizational structure for getting things done.

Five key issues that are having an immediate impact on the business community and its future well-being have been prioritized.

These include but are not limited to:

  • Traffic issues
  • Poorly maintained public properties
  • Poorly maintained private properties
  • Bermondsey transfer station operations
  • Area appearance and streetscape

The underlying purpose of the plan is to set a broad course of action for the Bermondsey Employment Area to retain and attract new investment and businesses.

About 200 companies employ approximately 10,000 people in the Bermondsey business area. Businesses are attracted to the area by low real estate costs, access to affordable labour and access to the Don Valley Parkway corridor, the downtown core and the north Toronto residential corridor.
