PHIPA - Personal Health Information Protection Act

The City is responsible for protecting personal health information under the PHIPA - the Personal Health Information Protection Act.

This Act has strict rules designed to protect your personal health information in the City's custody.

In the City, these divisions are covered by the Act:
Your personal health information must be kept private and secure. You or a person who can legally make decisions for you about your health information can use and see it. Your information is shared among your doctors, nurses, care givers and other team members who provide care and assistance to you. The City may collect, use and give out your personal health information to others to:
  • provide you with health care and assistance
  • communicate or consult about your health care with your doctor and other health care providers
  • obtain payment for your health care as required
  • conduct health system planning and research
  • report as required or permitted by the law
When you need access to your personal health information, your first course of access is to contact the person in the division that is holding your record. If this informal access does not satisfy your needs, you can make a freedom of information request. You have also the right to complain to the Information and Privacy Commissioner, when access to your health information is denied or you believe your privacy has been violated.
