Keeping our streets safe
In the short history of CityWatch, several groups of municipal workers have already been recognized through the program for their timely, cautious intervention.
Slippery walkway
Two employees of Works and Emergency Services took action when they saw an elderly woman who had fallen on a slippery walkway during the winter (2002).
Brian Fairley and Peter Fitchett of the Solid Waste Management Services division were collecting garbage on their route when they saw the woman lying on the sidewalk and struggling to get up. It was apparent that she had slipped and fallen while putting out her garbage for pick-up.
Brian went to her assistance while Peter called his dispatcher by radio. They stayed with the injured woman, comforting her until paramedics arrived and took over care of the grateful woman. Co-worker Rod Huckerby later realized the incident warranted the kind of appreciation and recognition provided by CityWatch. He notified program administrator Benedicta Lian about the occurrence.
