City Manager Joe Pennachetti welcomed recipients and attendees at the start of the ceremony. Ontario Lieutenant Governor David C. Onley warmed up the crowd by extending greetings, congratulations and encouragement to continue doing good works. Mayor David Miller delivers opening remarks to the capacity crowd.

City of Toronto Poet Laureate Dionne Brand applauds all the 2009 recipients after she read Praise Poem for the recipients of the 2009 Human Rights Awards, which she composed specifically to recognize the evening’s award recipients. The host for the evening, Merella Fernandez, of 'CityNews', is thanked Mayor David Miller. As a token of thanks, the Mayor is seen here presenting Ms. Fernandez with a little light reading - a copy of each of the five finalists for the 2009 City of Toronto Book Award and a copy of Poet Laureate Dionne Brand's novel 'What We All Long For' which won the City of Toronto Book award in 2006.
