* * Roundtable on Children, Youth and Education *

Purpose
To advise the Mayor and City Council and to engage the community on policies, programs, strategies and actions that will demonstrably improve the well-being of children and youth in the City of Toronto.

Composition and Membership
The roundtable will be composed of up to 25 members including the Mayor and up to four members of Council. The remaining members will be representative of all orders of government (elected representatives from provincial and federal governments, school boards), Toronto Board of Health, Toronto Youth Cabinet, Toronto Public Library as well as recreation, child welfare, business and children and youth non-governmental and advocacy organizations. The membership should reflect the diversity of Toronto's population.

Term
The roundtable will be established for the 2003-2006 term of Council and will conclude at the end of term.

Role and Procedures
The roundtable will advise the Mayor and City Council regarding:

  • civic strategies (one for children; one for youth) that will guide investments by Council and the Mayor in policies, programs and services that demonstrably improve the well-being of children and youth in the City of Toronto; and
  • working with other orders of government, in particular the education sector, and with non-profit organizations and the community on the development, funding and implementation of integrated and co-ordinated programs for children and youth.

With a particular emphasis on:

  • enhancing all types of developmental and learning experiences; and
  • expanding opportunities for the engagement of young people in all aspects of community life.
