Open letter to all residents of Toronto
June 2, 1998
Dear Friend:
As co-chairs of the City of Toronto Task Force on Community Access and Equity, we are writing to invite you to participate in a series of consultations. Your participation is very important. These consultations will help us make recommendations on how access and equity issues should be addressed by the City of Toronto.
Attached is the schedule of consultations being held to address the concerns of women, Aboriginal peoples, ethno-racial minorities, people with disabilities, lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgendered communities, and immigrants and refugees. Also included are the terms of reference for the task force and the consultation guide (to be on the Web site after June 17). The terms of reference are for your information; the guide is the focus of the consultations.
As you may know, the Toronto Transition Team has left it to City Council to decide on how best to address access and equity issues in the new city. To do this, council set-up this task force and asked us to develop recommendations for council to consider. The consultation guide is a tool to help us prepare recommendations aimed at ensuring council's political structure and bureaucracy are accessible, and that communities concerned about equality issues are a key part of city government.
Given this, the consultation guide provides options on how the city can support access and equity issues within council, city departments and within the community. There are also a number of questions following these options. This is what we want you to respond to. You may do this by attending one or more of the consultation sessions now scheduled.
You may also write in your comments and thoughts. If so, please address your concerns to Charles Smith, Manager, Access and Equity Centre, 55 John Street, 6th Floor, Toronto, Ontario, M5V 3C6 or by e-mail at AccessandEquity@toronto.ca
If you choose to respond in writing, please note that the deadline is June 30, 1998.
If you need further information, you may call one of the task force co-chairs: Councillor Joe Mihevc (416) 392-0208; Sylvia Maracle (416) 956-7575; Gloria Fallick (416) 928-3166.
Thank you very much for your interest in the Task Force on Community Access and Equity. We hope that you will take this opportunity to participate in the upcoming consultations.
Sincerely yours,
| Gloria Fallick |
