Councillor Irene Jones
City of Toronto

Regarding environmental issues, Councillor Jones' special interests include remediation of brown fields, safe sewers, naturalization of parks and the waterfront trail.

The councillor obtained Council approval to install a gate for sewer gas odour for the Berry Road Overflow Chamber of the Humber Treatment Plant, and was instrumental in the greening of several sites such as Brown's Line and the Home Depot. Councillor Jones ensured that former industrial sites in south Etobicoke were tested for pollutants. She also promotes use of public transit as a way of reducing pollution.

Councillor Jones is currently Vice-Chair, Board of Health; Member, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority; Member, Citizens Concerned About the Future of the Etobicoke Waterfront.

Councillor Joan King
City of Toronto

Councillor King's affiliations and accomplishments within the environmental field include chairing the Environment and Public Space Committee at Metro, the Blue Ribbon Task Force and her current membership in ICLEI. Her interest in environmental issues comes from her belief that sustainable development is the key to a good municipal plan.

Councillor Jack Layton
City of Toronto

As Chair of the Environmental Task Force, Jack Layton has been promoting environmental issues since he was first elected to office in 1982. He is currently Co-chair of the Municipalities Table, a Federal government-sponsored initiative where municipal leaders promote greenhouse gas reduction, and is promoting district energy systems and renewable energy as Commissioner of the Toronto Hydro Electric Commission.

Councillor Jane Pitfield
City of Toronto

On September 24, 1998, Jane Pitfield was elected to Toronto City Council. Regarding environmental issues, she is particularly concerned about water quality, the Deep Water Cooling System, smog reduction and increasing the use of public transit.

Councillor Bill Saundercook
City of Toronto

Councillor Bill Saundercook has long been an enthusiastic environmentalist who was responsible for bringing the blue box program to the former City of York. As a member of the Environment Task Force, 3Rs Group, and Storm Water Group, he keeps abreast of pressing environmental issues and supports all efforts to improve our environment.

Councillor David Shiner
City of Toronto

Representing Ward 12, Seneca Heights, Councillor Shiner was the Chair of the former City of North York Environment Committee for 6 years. Under his leadership, the Committee reduced the use of pesticides in North York by over 90 per cent. Councillor Shiner is a strong advocate for public transportation and supports a variety of programs designed to reduce dependency on automobiles.

Dr. David Bell
Professor and Former Dean

Director, York Centre for Applied Sustainability
York University

A political scientist by training, David Bell received his PhD from Harvard University in 1969. Dr. Bell served as Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies from 1992-1996 at York University. He is currently Director of the York Centre for Applied Sustainability, which took over the resources and equipment of the Ontario Round Table on Environment and Economy when its mandate was terminated in the Fall of 1995. (David was an ORTEE member). David is currently a Director of Learning for a Sustainable Future; and Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Voluntary Challenge and Registry Inc.

Dr. Rosalie Bertell

An environmental epidemiologist, Dr. Bertell has been honored as a United Nations UNEP Global 500 Laureat (1993), and has received the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) (1986), as well as other awards and honorary degrees. She serves on the Citizen Advisory Board to the Environmental Assessment Board of Ontario, the Advisory Board to Health Canada's Great Lakes Health Effects Program and the Urban Peace Committee of the Rotary Club of Toronto.

Jim Chisholm has worked for the city, and formerly for Metro Toronto, since 1972 as a District Enforcement Officer enforcing Toronto's Sewer Use By-law. He is also the chair of the CUPE Loc. 79 Environment Committee, and alternate member to the City's Biosolids Multistakeholder Committee.

The interests of staff and students at the Toronto Catholic School Board are represented by Mary Cicogna. The Board chose Mrs. Cicogna as its representative because of her strong belief in the protection of our environment for future generations. At the Board, Mrs. Cicogna has been instrumental in the establishment of a moratorium on the use of pesticides, in the maintenance of school board sites and in identifying concerns related to the location of electro-magnetic fields near school playgrounds, as well as other environmentally related issues.

Ms. Elizabeth Dowdeswell
Past Under Secretary-General, United Nations
Past Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme

The focus of Ms. Dowdeswell's involvement with environmental issues has been on managing change, engaging the public in public policy-making, and strengthening communications and education as means to achieve results. She has recently completed a five-year term as Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. Prior to that appointment she served the federal government in numerous capacities: Assistant Deputy Minister, Environment Canada, responsible for the national weather and atmospheric agency, including leading climate change negotiations; Regional Director-General for Ontario; Canadian chair of the Great Lakes Water Quality Board; CEO of several public inquiries into federal water policy and meteorological services.

She has authored two books and several award-winning radio series on these topics, and co-directs the grass-roots monitoring organization "Citizens Environment Watch".

Mr. Bob Shaw

As director of the Central Region, Mr. Shaw is responsible for achieving compliance with provincial environment legislation and delivery of the Ministry's programs within the GTA. He graduated with a BSc. from the University of Guelph and has been employed with the Ministry for more than 25 years.
