The Task Force to Review the Taxi Industry has completed its mandate and is no longer active. The following information is provided for archival purposes.
On April 16, 1998, Toronto City Council established the Task Force to Review the Taxi industry in response to growing public concerns about a decline in customer service levels, safety standards, and working conditions within the taxi industry. The Task Force was comprised of seven members of City Council.
Task force goals for a reformed taxi industry
The new taxi system must:
- provide safe and secure service to the public
- offer high quality customer service in clean, comfortable taxis
- employ courteous, knowledgeable and experienced drivers
- permit people who work in the system to share fairly in the costs and benefits.
Process
On June 9 and 10, 1998, the task force held public meetings to give interested people an opportunity to express their views. Then a public workshop was held on July 6, 1998 to discuss the options.
The staff report on the review of the taxicab industry was released on October 7, 1998 and included 50 recommendations for reform. The Task Force adopted the report, as amended, on October 27, 1998, and requested staff to prepare a supplementary report to be considered by the Emergency and Protective Services Committee on November 3, 1998. The Emergency and Protective Services Committee also adopted the report, as further amended, and requested staff to provide additional information to Council. The item was before City Council at its meeting on November 25 and 26, 1998.
