Responsibility for social housing
Council supported a motion to inform the Province that the City cannot accept the new responsibility of managing and maintaining social housing in Toronto unless Ontario provides funding for repairs and other costs. City officials are concerned that taking on legal responsibility for the 95,000 housing units involved is beyond the City's financial means.
The provincial government adopted legislation December 12 that officially downloads to municipalities full responsibility for social housing effective January 1.
