Profile
First elected as an Alderman with the City of Scarborough in 1984, Councillor Brian Ashton represents the Scarborough waterfront.

Throughout that time, he has had wide and varied responsibilities. From serving as Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission and the newly amalgamated City of Toronto's Economic Development and Parks Committee, to Vice-Chair of the Police Service Board, to serving on all major standing committees, Councillor Brian Ashton has brought his wisdom and experience to city life.

Brian has been involved in a number of economic development initiatives across the city, including initiating and chairing the City of Toronto's 2015 World Expo Steering committee.

As a Councillor, Brian Ashton calls each issue as he sees it, striking the fine balance between providing quality services and protecting the taxpayer. He is a firm believer that government has a positive role to play in people's lives, and brings this approach to each item that is before him at Council.

In addition to his policy interests, Councillor Ashton has also been instrumental in a number of community based initiatives, including Chairing the Metro Youth Task Force, the Special Committee on Firearms Control and the Social Development Strategy Task Force. He was also instrumental in the opening of a police sub-station at the Scarborough Town Centre and, at a local level ensuring funding to protect the Scarborough Bluffs from further erosion. Brian is proud of the many initiatives that have taken place in Ward 36 over the past few years including the $2-million refurbished Birchmount Stadium, the facelift at the Scarborough Cenotaph, new playground equipment at Bethune Park, the wonderful splash pad at Scarborough Bluffs Park, and upgrades to the Scarborough Village Theatre. He also fought to stop the Scarborough Expressway where a new park will soon be opened at McCowan Park, south of the railway tracks.

Councillor Ashton is 57 years old and has a wife and daughter. He holds a degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of Toronto.
