Swimming for Shore

The Assembly Hall, Lakeshore Arts and Humber Theatre present Swimming for Shore, a signature event of Celebrate 27 Arts Fest. Swimming for Shore is a play that celebrates the vibrant folklore of the Lakeshore, through songs and stories. First performed in 2001, it played to sold-out audiences as part of the Assembly Hall's opening ceremonies. The presenting organizations are pleased to bring this wonderful production back to the Lakeshore community in 2011, in celebration of the Assembly Hall's 10th anniversary.

Swimming for Shore Once More!

Ten years ago, local residents from the ages of 7 to 75 volunteered countless hours to bring the history of the Lakeshore to the stage for the opening of the cultural community centre, The Assembly Hall. Stories were gathered from people of all walks of life: seniors who had grown up here, nurses who worked at the Lakeshore Psychiatric grounds, youth from the local high schools and members of our historical societies. These stories provided the playwright, Rex Deverell, with a rich tapestry of history and laid the groundwork for him to weave together a play that celebrated our history and revealed hope for the future.

The play met with a resounding success; 10 performances attracted over a thousand people and it galvanized the community and made everyone who resided in the Lakeshore proud to call it home. For those who missed it, there has always been a sense of regret and both Lakeshore Arts and the Assembly Hall have been asked countless number of times when is it coming back.

Now to mark the Assembly Hall’s 10th anniversary the play is being remounted. In partnership with Humber College and Lakeshore Arts, the Assembly Hall has taken the lead to bring this play back to the community for a command performance. The show will be produced by Humber Theatre's creative team, under the direction of Diana Belshaw. The roles will be performed by Humber students, some 21 students with the lead role played by Equity actor, Janet Amos, to provide the students with an opportunity to work with a theatre professional. Rex Deverell is working with the students to provide a fresh look at the script, to reflect the past decade of Lakeshore life.

We look forward to greeting you at the Assembly Hall. It is an exciting opportunity to come out and learn about the history of the place where you live, work and play, through anecdotes, song and stories. Lakeshore Arts will be hosting a widely-anticipated opening gala performance on April 8, which will celebrate the return of Swimming for Shore and raise funds for community arts programming in the Lakeshore. You don’t want to miss it!
