Programs & Specialty Workshops for Children, Youth & Families

Cartooning - Children ages 7 – 13 will explore cartooning, drawing and creative writing. Students will also hone their composition skills and add to their techniques through a variety of media.

Cartooning & Drawing - This course covers basic drawing and cartooning skills and concepts. Students age 14 and up will explore the elements and principles of design through various drawing media, including pencil, pen and ink, markers, pastel and mixed media.

Family Creative Art – This course will give parents/caregivers an opportunity to spend quality art time with their children (age 5+) while experimenting with different media. * Please note: each family member must register separately.

Creative Art – Students ages 6 – 8 and 9 – 13 will have an opportunity to work with a variety of media. They will expand their imagination while producing unique arts and crafts in a fun environment. The projects will vary on a weekly or bi-weekly basis over the 10-week session.

Creative Clay - Children ages 7-10 and 11-13 will explore the possibilities of working with clay. Basic pottery techniques such as pinching, coiling, slab and glazing are introduced. Projects are designed to stimulate the imagination as well as to develop pottery skills.

All About Art - Children ages 7- 10 and 11-13 will explore various techniques of sketching, acrylic painting, and some three-dimensional media. This course will stress the fundamental skills in these media while encouraging creative expression.

Art Portfolio Development – Students ages 14 to 18 will be guided through a series of art-making and portfolio-building projects in preparation for applying to a post secondary fine arts program.

Photography – Learn to take digital photos in this hands-on introductory course. Take photo walks in nature, portraits of your friends, and talk about lighting, composition, perspective, macro- photography and experimenting with long exposures. You will also learn various digital camera techniques and an understanding of their functions.

Sewing for Kids (10 - 13 years) – This 8-week workshop is designed as an introduction to the art of sewing. Students will learn to work safely with a sewing machine and the necessary tools required when learning to sew. They will become comfortable operating a sewing machine and begin to develop the skills required to create simple projects. Each student is required to bring a sewing machine in good working order and a basic sewing kit including scissors. A $5 material fee is payable to the instructor.

Theatre for Kids (10 – 12 years) – This class, offered in partnership with the Community Arts Guild, uses theatre games, improv, storytelling and voice and movement activities to develop participants' performance skills. We will focus on teamwork, imagination, self-expression, play and building trust and confidence within ourselves and the group. All levels of experience welcome.

Salsa for Chicas and Chicos (7 – 10 years) - Aye caramba! Baila!! Come and find the hidden dancer in your kids! Thought you only heard about Salsa?! Think again. Learn Merengue, Bachata, Cha Cha, Samba and more. Kids will be exposed to different rhythms, dance styles and more. A super fun, active and peppy class. The last class features a choreographed student show.

Bollywood for Kids (11 - 13 years) - Aaja Nachle! (that's "let's dance" in Hindi!) Come and find the hidden dancer in your kids! Thought you only heard about "Slumdog Millionaire"?! Think again... Learn to move and groove to many Bollywood hit songs, complete with shakes, shimmies, jazz and acro with Laura Dee. Kids will be exposed to different rhythms, dance styles and more. A super fun, active and peppy class! The last class features a choreographed student show.

Latin Jazz for Kids ( 7 - 10 years) -Explore the marriage of Jazz and Latin Rhythm from A-Z with Laura Dee. Includes intro to Latin Jazz, a revolution of Latin Jazz rhythms, theory and technique and improvisation illustrated! Perfect to stretch, build and tone young muscles, develop better posture and movement. Perfect for boys and girls who like music or dance. The last class features a choreographed student show.

Thursdays, Zumba-ATOMIC ® (11 - 13 years) – Your kids are going to love the Zumbatomic® fitness with Laura Dee. It’s a fast-forward fusion of the Zumba program’s moves (salsa, cumbia, reggae, hip-hop and more) and high-octane workouts designed to let kids ages 10-13, max out on fun and fitness all at the same time. Safe and effective, kids can’t wait to get into the Zumbatomic groove. Watch their energy and fitness levels soar as they get into the groove to Latin and world music. Let Zumbatomic show your kids how exercise and staying fit can be a blast! The last class features a student show.

Beads! Beads! Beads! (9 - 13 years) – This workshop encourages children to experience their own creativity and use their artistic expression to discover their individuality. As a jewellery artist in Toronto, Montreal & Spain, instructor Laura Dee looks forward to bringing new 2012 projects to inspire children in the workshop, from spring surprises, garden veggies and lots in between with necklaces, bookmarks, mobiles and more!

Paper! Paper! Paper! (9 – 13 years) – Paper making is a centuries old craft often requiring specialized equipment. In this workshop with Laura Dee, kids can make their own paper with simple screens and paper pulp using household materials. The basics are the same but much more fun and less precise than the traditional methods. Kids will learn different styles and use colour, nature and create special projects every week! Papermaking is appropriate for many reasons. It has the capability to transform waste into something usable.

Yoga for Kids - Yoga classes encourage creativity and imagination, while integrating songs, music, storytelling, games, creative movement and yoga poses in a structured, non-­competitive, and sometimes energetic, sometimes relaxing atmosphere. Enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of Nature @ Cedar Ridge and learn yoga on the grass...!

Drumming for Kids (7-10 yrs) – Children will learn to drum in a fun and creative environment. Singing, movement and world rhythms will be incorporated.

Intro to Printmaking for Teens (14 - 18) – Using glue, paste and everyday household objects you can create imaginative prints called collographs. By carving into a soft surface you can create relief prints. Scratching into a plate will create drypoints. Have fun expressing your creativity while exploring basic non-toxic printmaking techniques!

Jr. Leader Training – This course is designed for youth ages 14 plus who are interested in volunteering as a Junior Leader at the Expressions fine art summer camp at Cedar Ridge. Leadership and basic arts skills will be developed during the program. Participants will receive a certificate confirming completion of the course. Limited volunteer positions available on a first come first served basis. *Please note: This course is mandatory for all volunteers of Expressions. The age requirement of 14 years is FIRM.

Expressions Summer Art Camp

Cedar Ridge Creative Centre offers its annual summer visual arts day camp for children ages 8 to 13 years. Campers will have an exciting opportunity to create and experiment with drawing and painting, printmaking and sculpture, video, arts and crafts, pottery and recreation. Sessions run for two weeks.

Please Note:

  • Transportation, lunches, and snacks are not included in the registration fee.
  • Expressions is a nut-free camp. Please do not send any products containing nuts with your child.
  • Extended hours are available for an additional charge from 8-9 am and 4-5 pm.
  • Expressions does not allow registration for children outside the 8 to 13 age range.
  • Expressions runs Monday to Friday in two-week sessions, with the exception of statutory holidays (these sessions are 9 days only).
