New Exhibit
Ecological balance of the Don Valley coming to the Market Gallery
The development and restoration of the Don Valley is the focus of the next exhibit at the Market Gallery on display from October 2, 2004 to January 30, 2005.
Reconnecting with the Don - Balancing the Valley examines Toronto’s relationship with the Don Valley from an early agricultural settlement, through industrialization and development as a transportation corridor, and finally, to its present state as a recognized ecological watershed in one of the most urbanized areas of Canada.
The exhibit explores the changing attitudes towards the Don Valley. The Don was once a clean, cold river teeming with fish surrounded by forests and meadows rich with wildlife. With development, the valley changed from a fishing ground to a dumping ground. Reconnecting with the Don will show the ongoing efforts to restore ecological balance and return the Don to a watershed for all to enjoy.
Historical and contemporary photographs, documents and art will illustrate the changing landscape of this major Toronto landmark. The exhibit is curated in partnership with the Task Force to Bring Back the Don, a citizens’ group sponsored by the City of Toronto that works to “bring back” a clean, green and accessible Don River watershed. The Task Force to Bring Back the Don is celebrating its 15th anniversary.
The Market Gallery offers changing exhibitions dedicated to Toronto’s history, art and culture as well as educational programs for school groups and adults. Located inside the South St. Lawrence Market, in Toronto’s oldest neighbourhood, the main gallery occupies the 19th century city council chamber which is all that remains from the City Hall that stood on this site from1845 to 1899.
