People and Places of Riverdale opens at the Market Gallery

People and Places of Riverdale opens at the Market Gallery on June 26 and is on exhibit until September 26, 2004.

The exhibit explores the history of the Riverdale neighbourhood from its beginnings as the land ‘East of the Don', to a village of farmers, to a working class suburb of Toronto and its annexation to the city in 1884.

Through displays of historic and contemporary maps, photographs and artwork discover the people who called Riverdale home; visit the distinctive parks and buildings of this unique neighbourhood and view the streets of yesteryear.

People and Places of Riverdale takes in the area east of the Don River to Coxwell Avenue in the west, north to Danforth Avenue and south to Lake Ontario. The exhibit also include Riverside (as it was known before annexation) and Leslieville.

Historical maps and photographs from collections housed at the Toronto Reference Library and the City of Toronto Archives and selected artwork from the Artists' Network of Riverdale are included in the exhibit.

The Market Gallery offers changing exhibitions dedicated to Toronto's history, art and culture as well as educational programs for school groups and adults. Located inside the South St. Lawrence Market, in Toronto's oldest neighbourhood, the main gallery occupies the 19th century city council chamber which is all that remains from the City Hall that stood on this site from 1845 to 1899.

Admission is free to the Market Gallery on the second floor of the South St. Lawrence Market, 95 Front St. E. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m.- 4 p.m.
