From the 1830s to the 1880s, John Howard and his wife Jemima gardened extensively around Colborne Lodge, their country home at the south end of High Park. Thanks to Howard's practice of keeping detailed records of the plantings, visitors to the Lodge today can enjoy a re-creation of their ornamental, kitchen and tomb gardens.

A dedicated group of volunteers and Cultural Services staff work together to plan and maintain these unique gardens according to the Howard diaries and 19th-century landscape design.
The recreated gardens are beautiful throughout the growing season. From late April, a stunning display of spring bulbs introduces the iris, roses and peonies of late May and June. They, in turn, give way to the spectacular hollyhocks of high summer. Fall brings on the asters - a magnet for masses of migrating monarch butterflies.
