COMMEMORATING OUR COLLECTIVE HISTORY
Recent years have been marked by successes in the efforts to preserve Victoria Memorial Square. Citizens and public representatives have spearheaded initiatives to revitalize the square and increase public knowledge of its history. Although their voices have long been silenced, the stories of the men, women, and children interred in the square, as well as those of the people who buried them, can enlighten us about the founding landscape of the city, life at the Fort York garrison, and the development of a historical self-consciousness in Toronto. The significance of Victoria Square derives not only from the history infused in its soil, but also from its ability to help us discover more about ourselves as Torontonians: what we are, what we have been, and what we may someday become.
