  CAN-BIKE 2:
Training for Your Workplace or Organization

It is our understanding that since the Criminal Code was amended with Bill C-45 organizations are legally responsible for providing appropriate training for their employees and/or representatives.

Your employer is responsible for providing the basic training to ensure that you have the skills and knowledge to do your job safely. If you are required to ride a bike to perform work duties, then your employer is responsible for providing you with the appropriate training to ride safely. CAN-BIKE is the only nationally recognized safe cycling program in Canada that can provide the certification to fulfill this basic requirement. CAN-BIKE 2 is the 18 hour on-road/in-class course that best prepares a person for jobs that involve cycling.

If you and other employees, volunteers or representatives from an organization need CAN-BIKE 2 training, there are several ways to get it.

1. Enroll in a public CAN-BIKE 2 course

  • CAN-BIKE 2 is an 18 hour course taught over three or four days usually on weekends and/or weekday evenings.
  • Students must have their own bike and helmet and must have experience riding on arterial roads.
  • Course listings can be found in the Parks and Recreation Toronto Fun Guides under the Sports section in all four guides. A full schedule is also available on the CAN-BIKE home page
  • The fee for this course is $106 for Toronto residents and $141 for non-residents.
  • Registration is handled through Parks and Recreation. Please refer to the Toronto Fun Guide website or call 416-338-4386 for instructions.

2. Identify someone within your company or organization to become a CAN-BIKE instructor and then provide in-house instruction for your staff/volunteers

  • The company or organization must be able to provide insurance for the instructor and appropriate training facilities.
  • CAN-BIKE instructors who teach must maintain current certification and a membership with their provincial cycling association.
  • CAN-BIKE instructors must submit a copy of all student and course records to their provincial cycling association and the Canadian Cycling Association.

To become CAN-BIKE Instructor in Toronto you need:

  • CAN-BIKE 2 certification
    • Completed at a high level of proficiency - 80% written - 90% practical
    • Must be recommended by the Instructor
    • Must demonstrate good organizational, people and leadership skills
  • • Completion of CAN-BIKE Instructor Workshop
    • Completed at a high level of proficiency - 80% written - 90% practical
    • Must be recommended by the National Examiner

Terms of Employment

  • The 2010 City of Toronto Parks & Recreation pay rate for CAN-BIKE instructors is $16.69-$22.64/hr
  • The company or organization writes its own terms of employment for in-house instructors

After successful completion of the Instructor Workshop, instructors must contact Brandon Arnold at the Ontario Cycling Association at racing@ontariocycling.org or 416-426-7401 and make arrangements to receive the appropriate CAN-BIKE handouts and forms for courses they teach.

If the instructor wants to use his or her instructor credentials to teach public courses for the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation department, the City of Toronto hiring process must be followed, including a police background check and NEO training (a one-day training program required for all Parks and Recreation staff provided by the City of Toronto. Instructors are paid for this day). For details on the City of Toronto Parks and Recreation hiring process, please visit Hiring Now.
