Welcome to Cyclometer, a monthly newsletter to keep cyclists informed about cycling issues and programs in the City of Toronto.
CONTENTS:
1) Toronto Cycling Committee needs new members
You have until March 17, 2004 to get your application in if you want to apply for a volunteer position on the Toronto Cycling Committee. Members are responsible to represent the interests of cyclists within the City; to regularly attend full committee meetings and to actively participate in at least one Subcommittee and to assist with other aspects of the Toronto Cycling Committee's work.
To be eligible for appointment, you must be a resident or ratepayer of the City of Toronto or the spouse of such a person and not be an employee of the City of Toronto (CAN-BIKE instructors are exempt). The Cycling Committee provides input into policies, programs and initiatives of the City of Toronto. The Cycling Committee consists of 15 citizens-at-large that are appointed for a three year term. In addition the committee has represenatives from the following organizations: Toronto Pedestrian Committee; Toronto Bicycling Network; Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists (ARC); Community Bicycle Network; Toronto District School Board; Toronto Catholic District School Board; and one Council Member. The Committee meets once a month. Subcommittees also meet once a month to look at issues under the following working groups: Education and Safety; Communications and Promotions; and Road and Trails.

2) Toronto Cycling Committee Meeting Dates

3) Toronto International Bicycle Show - March 5, 6, 7, 2004
Looking to get excited about cycling this spring? Consider attending the Toronto International Bicycle Show this weekend. We'll be there at the Toronto Cycling Committee Booth # 802. Special events and activities include BMX contests, Mountain Bike Quad Slalom Competition and what's new and hot in bicycles, accessories and apparel for 2004. There will be a Kids Cycling Zone, a Bicycle Film Festival and Bicycle Giveaways. Come down to the CNE National Trade Centre, Hall A, Friday March 5th Noon - 9 p.m.; Saturday March 6th from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sunday March 7 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
4) Budget Process at the City
To find out more about the City's budget process, go to http://www.toronto.ca/budget2004/index.htm Council will approve the 2004 Budget in April. The City's cycling budget is included in the following Departments: Works and Emergency Services, Urban Development Services and Economic Development, Culture and Tourism.
5) Cycling Office moved to East York Civic Centre
The Cycling office in Urban Development Services, Transportation Planning has been moved from Jarvis St. to the East York Civic Centre. Phone numbers and emails have stayed the same but here's our new address:

6) Bike Week Update
We hope you're enjoying this positively balmy weather. Rest assured that the staff are working diligently to bring you an exciting 15th Annual Bike Week. As previously reported in Cyclometer, the Bike Week brochure is currently available through bike stores, community centres and civic centres across the city. Just a gentle reminder that the deadline for event registration is NOON FRIDAY MARCH 26TH, 2004.
Speaking of events, there are many exciting new developments for 2004. However, in interests of suspense and anticipation we can't divulge details just yet. One thing we can announce here is the return of the Bike Art Showcase to Bike Week 2004. To that end, the staff would like to invite artists to submit their cycling-related work for display in the:
- City Hall Rotunda from Monday May 24th to Friday May 28th
- Metro Hall Rotunda from Monday May 31st to Friday June 4th
Bike Week is looking for cycling related:
- Photography
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Art Bikes
- Film/Video

7) BUG Commuter Challenge
Fred Sztabinski has begun work as the new City of Toronto BUG Network Facilitator. His goals include improving the communication and effectiveness among the entire BUG Network, as well as striving to add new BUGs to the Network, while also working to meet the challenges of each individual BUG.
The Second Annual BUG Commuter Challenge is on May 25th. The challenge is to see which BUG can get the most cyclists to join in the Bike Week Group Commute. All registered participants receive a free Bike Week T-shirt. For more information and to register for the challenge email to bugs@toronto.ca.

The City has a vision for cycling in Toronto and wants you involved in making it happen. Cyclometer is a subscription service of the City of Toronto.
The first issue of Cyclometer went out on November 24, 1989. Now, as then, we hope that, like its namesake, Cyclometer will show you how far we've come, how fast we're going, and maybe how much pedalling we have yet to do. So get on board and get involved. Your support is important.
