Issue # 88
December 2003

Welcome to Cyclometer, a monthly newsletter to keep cyclists informed about cycling issues and programs in the City of Toronto.

CONTENTS:

1) Happy Holidays and Happy New Year

The holidays are a good chance to relax, enjoy family and friends and to reflect back on all the accomplishments of the past year. 2004 brings new changes and new challenges and many opportunities to get involved in making cycling better in Toronto.

2) Toronto-Bicycle/Motor-Vehicle Collision Study on-line

The City has released a study of motor-vehicle collisions involving cyclists. The study revealed the kinds of car/bike collisions that are most common in Toronto, and sheds light on some of the contributing factors.

3) New bike lanes on Sheppard Avenue

A new section of the planned on-road bike lane network in District 4 has been completed on Sheppard Avenue East. A marked bike lane now exists between Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue, although the diamond bike symbol has not yet been painted west of Meadowvale Road. This section links to the off-road trail on Meadowvale Road leading to the Zoo, and could be reached via Port Union Road from the Rouge Hill GO station, although there is no bike lane marked as yet on Port Union Road. The planned trail heading north off Sheppard Avenue west of Meadowvale Road is not in place, but construction has started on the subdivision which will make this trail possible. Be prepared for mud on the road and heavy construction equipment in this area. Conlins Road leads south to Military Trail, the University of Toronto campus and Old Kingston Road, from where you can access the trail along the Highland Creek Valley and back to the lakeshore. The waterfront trail is under construction and may be accessible. Lawrence Avenue is the alternate route back to the GO station.

4. Opportunity to join Cycling Committee in 2004

Keep tuned in through Cyclometer and the website for information about how you can apply to sit on the Cycling Committee. The Toronto Cycling Committee acts as an advisory committee to City Council. At its January meeting, Council will decide on its governance structure regarding special committees. So look for information in late January. In the past, the committee has had two meetings a month - one full committee meeting and one meeting of each subcommittee (Road and Trail, Education/Safety and Promotions).

5. Winter Cyclists planning for Bike Week 2004

Greetings Hearty Winter Cyclists. The snow may be falling and many of us are daydreaming of tropical vacations, with our bicycles of course. It is also time to start thinking about Bike Week 2004.

Bike Week launches on Tuesday May 25th with the:

15th Annual Group Commute & Free Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Toronto Cycling Committee
7:30 a.m. @ Bloor & High Park / Yonge & Lawrence / Danforth & Woodbine
8 a.m. @ Bloor & Yonge
Participate in the City of Toronto's marquee Bike Week event by meeting at one of three points around the city. Converge at Yonge and Bloor for a ride down to Nathan Phillips Square at 8:30 a.m. where everyone is invited to join the Cycling Committee for a delicious free breakfast provided by Whole Foods Market.

Getting There Is Half The Fun

Over 50 organizations and community groups participated in Bike Week 2003 to host over 100 events. We expect this year's event to be even bigger. Here are just a few of the exciting events you can take part in next year:

Lunchtime Cycling Festival and Fair

Pedal Your Influence

While the City of Toronto and the Toronto Cycling Committee co-ordinate several key events, the support and involvement of Toronto's cycling community is at the heart of its popularity. We need your help to make Bike Week great, so why not host a cycling-related event in your community.

The deadline for registration is NOON FRIDAY MARCH 26TH, 2004 for inclusion in the Bike Week Calendar. Please mark the deadline on your calendar and send us your form as soon as possible.

6. Ahead in the Bike Lane

No meetings

The City has a vision for cycling in Toronto and wants you involved in making it happen. Cyclometer is a subscription service of the City of Toronto.

The first issue of Cyclometer went out on November 24, 1989. Now, as then, we hope that, like its namesake, Cyclometer will show you how far we've come, how fast we're going, and maybe how much pedalling we have yet to do. So get on board and get involved. Your support is important.

Please take the time to forward this issue of Cycling News! to a fellow cyclist who may be interested.
