Jarvis Street Summary of Traffic Data
July 15, 2010 the City of Toronto modified the traffic lane markings on Jarvis Street. The conversion removed the alternating center lane (the only one of its kind in this City) and converted the street from five traffic lanes, to four traffic lanes plus two bicycle lanes. Recognizing the high level of interest in this corridor, Transportation Services has been monitoring before and after traffic conditions. Read a summary of the traffic data.
Prior to installation, the Environmental Assessment (EA) indicated travel times for motor vehicles were expected to increase by 2 minutes. A review of the data showed that generally motor vehicles now move as predicted.
For motorists headed northbound in afternoon rush hour, travel times have increased higher than expected. Transportation Services will be implementing modifications to the Gerrard Street traffic signal timing this summer, northbound drivers turning left, improving overall flow on the corridor.
Additionally, counts indicate that bicycle traffic has increased by at least 30%. Transportation Services plans to continue collecting traffic count data on Jarvis Street throughout the Spring.

Cosburn Bike Lanes
As part of the State of Good Repair program (SOGR), , East York's Cosburn Avenue was re-surfaced. Unfortunately, as this job was nearing completion, the temperatures dropped, and so the bike lanes were not re-painted. The re-painting of the Cosburn bike lanes was scheduled as a priority item; these bike lanes will be re-installed as soon as the night-time temperatures are sufficiently warm enough that the striping will adhere properly to the asphalt.
