Bluffers Park Multi-Use Trail Public Meeting

City Council on July 13, 2011 adopted a motion to defer a Public Consultation meeting planned to discuss trail improvement options for Bluffers Park.  A new date has now been set for this public meeting:

Date: Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Presentation at 7 p.m.
Location: Blessed Cardinal Newman High School Auditorium, 100 Brimley Rd. South (at Kingston Rd.)

This connection along the Scarborough waterfront is also part of the Waterfront Trail system which provides a waterfront route between Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Quebec border.  Bluffer's Park is an important linkage in the Scarborough section of the Waterfront Trail.

Improvements to the Bluffer's Park trail will:  allow for the re-location of the Waterfront Trail away from busy Kingston Road; provide a neighbourhood connector between Undercliff Drive and Brimley Road South; create a multi-use trail that can be used by walkers and cyclists, as well as allow people with various degrees of accessibility needs to experience the views and the natural environment.
We want your input, and invite you to a public meeting for this project.  This meeting is an opportunity to let us know about whether you think this cycling connection is important, and to contribute your input on alignment options, design and surface materials.

Public Works and Infrastructure Committee Recommends $150 Fines for Motorists Illegally Stopping, Standing and Parking in Bicycle Lanes

On January 4, 2012, Public Works and Infrastructure Committee adopted a Transportation Services staff report which recommended that the fine for stopping, standing or parking in bicycle lanes be increased from $60 to $150.

The Transportation Services staff report responded to Council's request to consider ways to alleviate traffic congestion caused by motorists and delivery vehicles obstructing traffic lanes and bicycle lanes during rush periods. The transportation report recommends that stopping, standing and parking fines be increased to $150 for motorists during rush periods and that the increased fines apply to bicycle lanes at all times of the day.

The report will be considered by City Council on February 6, 2012.

Bill 344 to Amend the Motor Vehicle Safety Act

In November 2011, Toronto Member of Parliament Oliva Chow, tabled an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Bill C-344) which, if adopted,  would require large trucks to be fitted with side guards.  Side guards are intended to prevent unprotected road users, namely pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists  form being pulled under the weels of large vehicles.

Similar side guard legislation is already in place in Europe. Side guards were first recommended in Toronto by the 1998 Regional Coroner's report into deaths of cyclists.   Previous attempts to have the House of Commons adopt side guard regulations, in 2006 and 2010, were not successful.

BIXI Stations Move for Winter – Expand Service Area
BIXI Toronto and the city of Toronto have relocated stations to accommodate snow removal operations. At the same time, BIXI Toronto worked closely with its partner, the city of Toronto, to study the performance of each station and decided to relocate stations with a low level of use to busier locations. The stations have been moved a little further east and west to expand the service area. The larger area will offer BIXI users more options in a larger service area.

Trail Improvements to Milkman's Lane Complete

Milkman's Lane is a 130 year old trail connecting Rosedale to the Don Valley, from South Drive near Craigleigh Gardens Park.  Historically it was used by equestrians and for transportation of commercial goods. Today Milkman's Lane is well-used by hikers, dog-walkers, cyclists and joggers and connects the community to the Don Valley trail network and the Brick Works. Parks, Forestry and Recreation recently upgarded the trail to ensure that it will continue to serve the community for many more years.
