Background
In July 2009 Transportation Services was awarded funding through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program to develop multi-use trails within hydro and rail corridors across the City. These projects will be managed as a joint initiative between Transportation Services, and Parks, Forestry & Recreation.
The RInC funding received by Transportation Services will be used to develop new/upgraded multi-use trails. A total of seven multi-use trail projects will be developed within the Finch Hydro Corridor, Gatineau Hydro Corridor, CN Leaside and Scarborough Pit Spur (former rail corridors). This will add approximately 30 kilometers of new and 4 km of upgraded off-road bike trails to the City's Bikeway Network and represents the largest expansion of the City's trail system in a single year.
About this Segment
Gatineau Hydro Corridor Kennedy to Highland Creek
This project runs through Wards 37, 38 and 43. The Multi-Use Path will be about 3.5 m in width and paved with asphalt.
This segment includes new trail mainly along the Gatineau Hydro Corridor, it includes a signed, on-street section which is about 2km in length. The on-street section will run along Tara to Fitzgibbon, and re-enter the corridor at Marcos Blvd., east of Midland Ave. The trail will also use existing park pathways through Thomson Memorial Park.
New amenities will include benches, bike parking, garbage receptacles, landscaping, light fixtures and crossing signals for crossing major arterial roads. Signage and pavement markings will be included along the route.
Public Information Sessions
Given the tight timelines of these trail projects, under the RInC funding agreement each project had one public information session to inform the community of the trail project underway and present the detailed designs for the trail. These sessions were organized for March - May 2010.
