Message from Mayor David Miller:
As Mayor of Toronto, one of my most important goals is to keep the activities of City Hall transparent, accessible and effective. To me, that means keeping things simple. Simplification was the guiding principle behind the creation of the City's roundtables.
Before this City Council was elected last November, Toronto had an unnecessarily complicated hodgepodge of task forces, advisory groups and subcommittees dealing with a wide range of municipal issues. We replaced them with six roundtables, each of which addresses a broad area of public policy.
These roundtables are a way for concerned Torontonians to have input into the policies of the Mayor's Office and City Council. Each comprises of a small number of City councillors and a larger group of experts and stakeholders from relevant fields.
All roundtables report directly to the Policy and Finance committee. We arranged the chain of command this way to ensure that they have the clout they need to keep their respective issues high on the City agenda.
You'll no doubt notice how intertwined mandates of the roundtables are. In fact, they are all facets of the same grand vision: they are all about reinvesting in the public realm and making sure that the strengths of this city benefit each and every resident.
