  The City's Waste Diversion Team

Recycle posterIn 2003, the City of Toronto's Waste Diversion Team (WDT) was created to help the City's agencies, boards, commissions and divisions (ABC&Ds) meet City Council's target of 70 per cent waste diversion by 2010.

Read the Team's "Diverting News" to see the inventive programs implemented by Team members in their efforts to divert 70% by 2010.

The WDT no longer meets on a regular basis, but continues to meet 'virtually' to network.

The City's waste diversion rate improved each year since the team started.

  • 2004 - 39 per cent
  • 2005 - 49 per cent
  • 2006 - 63 per cent
  • 2007 - 67 per cent
  • 2008 - 67 per cent
  • 2009 - 69 per cent
  • 2010 - 67 per cent

How we calculate waste diversion rates
Here is how we calculate a waste diversion rate for each ABC&D:

Weight of recyclables

Weight of garbage + weight of recyclables + weight of organics X 100%
