  The City's Waste Diversion Team

Recycle posterThe City of Toronto's Waste Diversion Team (WDT) was created to help the City's agencies, boards, commissions and divisions (ABC&Ds) meet City Council's target of 70 per cent waste diversion by 2010.

Each ABCD created a waste diversion plan to show how each organization will meet its target.

Read the Team's "Diverting News" to see the inventive programs implemented by Team members in their efforts to divert 70% by 2010.

The City's waste diversion rate has improved each year since the team has existed.

  • 2004 - 39 per cent
  • 2005 - 49 per cent
  • 2006 - 63 per cent
  • 2007 - 67 per cent
  • 2008 - 67 per cent
  • 2009 - 69 per cent
  • 2010 - 67 per cent

How we calculate waste diversion rates
Here is how we calculate a waste diversion rate for each ABC&D:

Weight of recyclables

Weight of garbage + weight of recyclables X 100%
