  The City's Waste Diversion Team

Recycle posterThe City of Toronto's Waste Diversion Team (WDT) was created in May 2003 to help the City's agencies, boards, commissions and divisions (ABC&Ds) meet City Council's target of 70% waste diversion by 2010.

Each ABCD created a waste diversion plan that lays out a roadmap to show how each organization will meet its target.

The City's waste diversion rate has improved each year since the team has existed.

  • 2004 - 39 per cent
  • 2005 - 49 per cent
  • 2006 - 63 per cent
  • 2007 - 67 per cent
  • 2008 - 67 per cent

The team was recognized for its efforts at the Public Sector Quality Fair 2005 with a Certificate of Excellence; it was a finalist in the 2007 Green Toronto Awards' "Environmental Achievement Award" category.

How we calculate waste diversion rates
Here is how we calculate a waste diversion rate for each ABC&D:

Weight of recyclables

Weight of garbage + weight of recyclables X 100%
