ABCD waste diversion rates and activities
Waste audits and waste tracking
City Council directed each Agency, Board, Commission and Division (ABCD) to track its waste initially by having a solid waste audit done annually. The audits looked at three days of garbage and recycling; the waste was identified and weighed and the results amortized over a working year (250 days).
These audits not only showed each ABCD's waste diversion rate each year, they established baselines against which ABCDs were to judge future progress in meeting Council's waste diversion goal of diverting 70% of their waste by 2010.
After three years of audits, Council then directed ABCDs to track their waste, once a week, in each quarter. This tracking was done by the staff who actually handled the waste, to ensure the information was as reliable as possible.
Tracking garbage and recycling helped each ABCD to establish an annual waste diversion rate; it identified areas needing improvement and encouraged further waste diversion activitiy.

The table below shows the ABCD diversion rates from 2004 - 2010.
Waste Diversion Rates for 2010 (PDF, 36 KB)
Waste diversion rates are shown from office workplaces and 'yard' or 'outside' workplaces. The "No Waste" recycling program is mandated for office workplaces; waste diversion programs in yards and/or outside working sites deal with different wastes from cement to leaf and yard waste.
