BOMA BESt Awards won by City Hall & Metro Hall
City Hall and Metro Hall have been awarded a Level 2 and Level 3 BOMA BESt Certificate respectively. These awards underscore the high environmental performance of these buildings and demonstrate excellence in management. The City's Energy & Waste Management Office co-ordinated the award applications.

COOL IT, POWER IT, GROW IT
- The greening of Toronto City Hall


On Tuesday April 21st, 2009, Mayor David Miller officially launched the greening of Toronto City Hall.

To COOL IT, City of Toronto has installed a cooling system at City Hall with Enwave’s Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC) to displace conventional electricity. To find out more about how the City is "COOLING IT" read the Eco-Kids Fun Fact Sheet or visit enwave.com

To GROW IT, construction on a new Green Podium Roof at City Hall has begun. The green podium roof will be Toronto's largest, publicly accessible green roof. It will be a new urban oasis in the heart of the city. Read more about the Green Podium Roof.

City Office Buildings Waste Diversion
In order to quantify recycling and garbage being generated in City buildings, Facilities & Real Estate tracks waste on a quarterly basis and annually carries out waste audits on larger office buildings.

City Wins FCM-CH2M HILL Sustainable Community Award!
On May 31, 2008, the City of Toronto received national recognition for its efforts in creating a green and sustainable city when it received an FCM-CH2M HILL Sustainable Community Award for its Arenas Retrofit Project. Read more.

Facilities & Real Estate Division is Watching its Waste Line
In 2008, Facilities & Real Estate (F&RE) Division diverted 84% of its office waste from landfill to recycling; this surpasses the goal City Council set each City Agency, Board, Commission and Division (ABCD) - to divert 70% of its waste by the end of 2010.

Deep Lake Water Cooling

In June 2006, Metro Hall (55 John Street) was the first Toronto municipal facility to be added to Enwave's Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC) system. City Hall (100 Queen Street West) and Police Headquarters (40 College Street) will be connected in 2008. The plan is to add Old City Hall (60 Queen Street West) to DWLC by 2010. Energy Retrofit Program Benefits City Buildings
City buildings benefit from the City's Energy Retrofit Program (ERP). Since 2004, the EWMO has project managed energy upgrades in more than 200 City buildings as part of the Energy Retrofit Program (ERP).

The ERP is financed with $35 million which includes $8.75 million from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Read more about Energy Retrofits.

Building Automation Systems (BAS) in City Facilities
Over 100 City of Toronto facilities, including Civic Centres, Arenas, Community Centres and Pools have new or upgraded BAS systems. This gives building operators the ability to control their buildings more efficiently and helps the City reduce its energy consumption. Read more about BAS.
Energy Efficiency Guidelines
These guidelines provide direction, information and/or minimum requirements in the upgrading of existing buildings to achieve optimum energy efficiency without reducing the building's performance or occupants' comfort.
