Co-op education
is a program in which high schools and communities co-operate to
provide a unique learning environment for students.

Requirements:
- Currently
enrolled in a Secondary School at Grades 11 or 12 within the
Toronto District School Board or Toronto Catholic District
School Board
- Enrolled
in a full day or morning Co-op program
- Possess
proof of immunization for Tetanus Toxoid
The Cooperative & Career
Education department, Toronto District School Board, is the liaison
office for processing all students
enrolled in the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic
District School Board seeking placement positions. Toronto Fire
Services has been involved in the Cooperative Education Program
since 1992 and has seen students successful in past employment
selection processes for Probationary Firefighter.
Students must qualify for placement by entering a selection
process that will include a Written exam consisting of basic
fire safety and First Aid questions. Students must achieve a
pass mark of 70% to gain access to the next level - Interview
Students
entering the Toronto Fire Services Cooperative education program
will receive insight into administration, Firefighter training
and fire safety applications, however the bulk of time is spent
observing daily operations.
Interview
Students invited to attend an interview are required
to bring:
- A completed
Work Agreement Form signed by themselves or parent/guardian
if under the age of 18
- A resume
Orientation
All students selected for placements will receive an orientation
before being assigned. The orientation will provide students with
information covering:
- Understanding
the rank structure at Toronto Fire Services
- General
fire safety and evacuation guidelines from City buildings
- Safety
requirements specific to placement locations
Placements
An average of 12 placements may become available each semester within the Divisions of Fire Prevention/Public Education, Training & Development, Mechanical Services, Recruitment and Community Outreach, Information Services and/or Support Services. Students are not placed in Fire Stations (Suppression Division) and are not permitted to attend emergency calls or ride-outs with fire trucks.
Students will receive a tour through Toronto Fire Services Communications Centre.
Non-semester students will complete only one term per placement. Students may apply for concurrent placements.
Please note that orientation and interviews maybe held on the same day.
