Toronto Fire Services Recruitment - Fire Prevention Inspector

The Fire Prevention Division of Toronto Fire Services meets the day to day challenges of providing fire inspection services, building plan approvals, building retrofit, fire code compliance and complaint inspections across the City of Toronto. Fire Prevention Division staff also interact directly with communities through the delivery of various programs and public speaking seminars to ultimately reduce the number of fire incidents and minimize the loss of life and property.

Staff assigned to the Division are committed to ensuring the safety of the public as their primary focus, by reducing the potential of fire in the built environment. The work carried out by our fire protection engineer and fire plans examinations staff, as well as our inspections staff, is vital in ensuring that all structures built in the city are in compliance with the Ontario Building and Ontario Fire Codes.

Your primary responsibility will be to enforce fire prevention regulations of the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario. You will conduct investigations on all types of new/existing buildings and ensure conformity with applicable by-laws, codes and regulations.

Acting as an assistant to the Fire Marshal, you will inspect and test fire protection equipment and systems, prepare reports, testify and give evidence in court, and prepare and present seminars on fire prevention and safety to groups and members of the public.

A Fire Prevention Inspector with Toronto Fire Services is someone who is self-motivated and able to work independently. All candidates must meet the required qualifications of the position. Additionally, candidates must prove themselves to be mature, responsible, attentive to detail, assertive and respectful, and eager to work as part of a team and to help others.

Fire Prevention Inspector - Recruitment and Selection Process

The recruitment and selection process for Fire Prevention Inspector - Fire Prevention & Public Education Division, Toronto Fire Services, includes several candidate evaluation stages. All interested candidates are advised to attend a Toronto Fire Services Career Information Session to learn about the recruitment and selection process for this position.

The recruitment and selection process for Fire Prevention Inspector may include an interview, written and/or practical test(s). The written and practical test(s) may include an assessment of the candidate's written report writing skills, decision making abilities, judgment, and knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, and related documents (e.g. NFPA codes and standards).

Fire Prevention Inspector - Major Responsibilities:
Under the direction of a Fire Prevention Officer, the Fire Prevention Inspector:

  • Inspects and conducts investigations on all types of new and existing buildings to ensure conformity with applicable By-laws, Codes and Regulations
  • Reads and interprets building plans, blueprints, installation guides, construction plans and specifications as well as issues Notice of Violation, Orders or Information Notices
  • Receives complaints to investigation and inspects and tests fire protection equipment and systems
  • Prepares reports and maintains records detailing information about the property, infractions observed and actions to be taken
  • Prepares written information for court and appears in court to testify and give evidence
  • Interviews members of the public to resolve unsatisfactory situations and instructions on situations to rectify conditions
  • Prepares and presents seminars on fire prevention and safety to groups and members of the public
  • Conducts education programs related to fire safety

Fire Prevention Inspector - Qualifications:

  1. Post-secondary education in Fire Protection Technology, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience.
  2. Demonstrated experience or knowledge of conducting property inspections.
  3. Demonstrated experience or knowledge of reading blueprints, installation guides, etc.
  4. Demonstrated experience or knowledge of the installation or maintenance/design of sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code and related legislation and by-laws.
  6. Demonstrated experience or knowledge of Public Education.
  7. Strong mechanical aptitude.
  8. Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence and must meet the necessary requirements to receive a City of Toronto Driver's Permit.
  9. Ability to walk long distances and climb ladders/scaffolding while conducting inspections.
  10. Excellent interpersonal/public relations/teamwork skills.
  11. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  12. Experience in the preparation of reports, correspondence and record maintenance.
  13. Previous experience in dealing with the public in enforcement situations or experience in construction, architecture or engineering is an asset.
