Hydraulic Hybrid Collection TruckHydraulic Hybrid Collection Truck
  • First of its kind in Canada

  • Peterbilt Model 320 Hybrid Class 8 collection truck with Eaton Corporation’s Hydraulic Launch Assist™ (HLA®) technology.

  • This hybrid system is best suited for vehicles that operate in stop and go duty cycles such as collection trucks.

  • It will be used by Solid Waste Management Services to collect garbage or recyclables.

  • Features:

    • Parallel hybrid HLA® system in which the conventional diesel powertrain is supplemented by the addition of a hydraulic system that propels the truck forward and helps slow it down.

  • Benefits of the system include a 20 to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy, up to four times longer brake life, less wear-and-tear on the engine, and reduced brake replacement costs.

Green Fleet Plan, 2008-2011
  • The City of Toronto is into its second Green Fleet Plan, 2008 – 2011, which was preceded by the Green Fleet Transition Plan, 2004-2007.

  • The current plan presents 38 actions for the City to undertake, including the use of fuel-efficient vehicles, alternative fuels, emission-reduction targets, management practices and sustainable choices.

  • Greening the City’s vehicle fleet operations will reduce fuel use, fuel costs and emissions of greenhouse gases and smog-causing pollutants, and reduce the fleet’s environmental impact.

  • Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health reports that pollutant emissions from traffic contribute to 440 premature deaths in Toronto each year. By greening its vehicles, the City of Toronto can help clear the air and protect people’s health.

  • The City of Toronto has more than 500 green vehicles in its fleet.
