Getting to 70% Diversion:

3Rs Working Group (includes Working Group Terms of Reference):

How did we come about?

  • New and Emerging Technologies Policies & Practices envisioned further source reduction was needed to maximize 3Rs City programs and add another group to look at an Environmental Assessment (EA) process for future Toronto waste facilities. Their final report and recommendations are archived here.
  • CEAT (Community Environmental Assessment Team) then took on the task of a full EA and the Ministry of Environment changed the requirements so a full EA was no longer required. CEAT’s task was completed in 2006 and made further recommendations to form two citizen-led groups: one that concentrated on residuals – now the Residual Waste Working Group (RWWG), and another that concentrated on source reduction and ways to reduce residuals from landfill. This is now the 3Rs Working Group (3RWG)
  • View 3RWG’s integrated Solid Waste Management network to engage the public and stakeholders to support/encourage waste reduction and develop 3Rs programs.
