Residential Multi-Unit Dwellings – Front- End and Static Bin Collection Customers
As of July 1, 2008, owners of a multi-unit building (buildings with nine or more units and some types of townhouses) are required to pay a fee for garbage collection based on how much garbage is set out at each building and type of collection provided.
Front-End (Bulk) Collection
Effective March 1, 2011, the new linear rate structure for Front-End (bulk) collection is based on a standard upfront service fee of $191.20 for the collection of the 1.917 cubic yards of un-compacted garbage or 0.9585 cubic yards compacted garbage (base volume). Excess garbage volume above the aforementioned base garbage volume will be charged a standard cubic yard fee of $13.27 for un-compacted garbage and $26.55 for compacted garbage. A rebate of $185.00 per unit per year will be allocated to City of Toronto customers participating in the City’s Solid Waste Collection Program. The compaction ratio, under the new rate structure and billing system reflects a 2:1 compacted to un-compacted ratio for garbage volume. As a City of Toronto customer, recycling, organics, bulky and scrap metal items, yard waste, household hazardous waste and waste electronics and equipment collection are still included at no additional charge.
The $185 per unit, per building is given back to owners as a rebate and used toward paying the solid waste management fee. The fee pays for garbage, recycling, litter prevention, landfill management and other diversion programs.
Condominium properties, whose bills will typically be sent to the condominium corporation, will also see a rebate of $185per unit on the new utility bill.
You can estimate the fee for your building using the Calculator Tool. There is no cost or limit on the amount of recycling/bulky items that can be set out for collection. As the City continues to collect data on the volume of waste set out by multi-unit dwellings, the mathematical formula used by the calculator may be adjusted to make sure actual revenues are in line with projected revenues. As a consequence, you may find that the actual fee on your utility bill is lower than your online estimate. Notice of any changes will be posted on the website.
Static Bin Collection
Effective March 1, 2011, Static Bin customers is based on the number of extra-large bins and frequency of collection.
Additional Garbage Bag tags are only available at Canadian Tire in packs of (5) $15.50.
