2010 Spring operational clean-up results
Led by Transportation Services, staff from Solid Waste Management Services, Toronto Water, Parks, Forestry & Recreation, Municipal Licensing & Standards, Fleet Services, Facilities & Management, and Real Estate Services collaborated to remove garbage and graffiti remaining after the winter season. The clean-up happened daily in four different districts of the City as a lead-up to the two litter pick-up events involving the public who participated in the Friday, April 23rd 20-Minute Makeover and the Saturday, April 24th Mayor David Miller’s Community Cleanup Day.
- Operational spring cleanup accomplishments include more than:
- 8,000 tonnes of debris removed (compared to 5,476 in 2009)
- 2,800 illegal signs removed
- 7,000 square metres of graffiti removed (compared to 2,900 in 2009)
- 2,000 tires picked up
- 700 dead trees removed
- 25,000 posters removed (compared to 8000 in 2009)
- 1,400 tree prunes done by Forestry (compared to 1000 in 2009
- Municipal Licensing & Standards (MLS) and Right-Of-Way (ROW) issued more than 4,000 notices (compared to 1,700 in 2009) and MLS took action to clean-up in approximately 10,000 instances (compared to 6,000 in 2009).
- An average, 2,000 plus staff were involved weekly and approximately 1,400 pieces of equipment were used per week.
- An example of participating external agencies included Ministry of Transportation Ontario, Toronto Police, Hydro One, Toronto Hydro, Parking Authority, CP Rail, and Canada Post.
