You have done your part and set your green bins out at curbside full of organic material to be processed into compost.

What goes in the green bin?


  • meat, fruits, shellfish, fish products
  • pasta, bread, cereal
  • dairy products, egg shells
  • coffee grounds, filters, tea bags
  • soiled paper food packaging: fast food paper packaging, ice cream boxes, muffin paper, flour and sugar bags
  • soiled paper towels, tissues
  • paper plates
  • household plants, including soil
  • diapers, sanitary products
  • animal waste, bedding (e.g. from bird/hamster cages)
  • kitty litter
  • pet food

Major Steps


There are five major steps that transform organic material collected at curbside into a finished compost product:

Step 1 1. Curbside Collection
Step 2 2. Pre-processing organic material
Step 3 3. Primary processing by anaerobic digestion
Step 4 4. Secondary processing by anaerobic compost
