Each of the winners of 2006 Green Toronto Awards received $5,000 to donate to the environmental organization of their choice.
Community Projects Award (Loblaw Companies Limited)
Brahms Energy Saving Team
Brahms Energy Saving Team (BEST) is the brainchild of tenants from two social housing high-rise buildings located on Brahms Avenue. The goal was to reduce energy consumption in their community. Toronto Community Housing funded new energy-efficient appliances and an improved heating system, and Toronto Environmental Alliance and Public Interest helped coach the team on delivering information to tenants in four languages and supplied energy-saving light bulbs. BEST estimates these initiatives will save $17,000 a year in energy costs.
Energy Conservation Award (AutoShare)
Tridel
Tridel recently completed two residential buildings that outperform the national energy code by 30%. The company was able to create energy efficiency by using lake water (for cooling) and heat recovery (for ventilation), and also by working with organizations like the Toronto Atmospheric Fund, which helps Tridel implement these practices without increasing the cost of living in a green building.
Environmental Awareness Award (Toronto Hydro)
EcoSchools Program
The EcoSchools Program provides a framework to over 17,000 classrooms across Toronto to plan and measure school greening initiatives. The program has helped reduce greenhouse gases and the impact of waste on landfill. Tree-planting initiatives shade buildings and save energy, and ongoing ecological literacy continues to green the minds of staff and students.
Green Design Award (Roots)
Toronto Botanical Garden
Toronto Botanical Garden, under the design leadership of architect David Sisam, created an energy-efficient green roof covering for the George and Kathy Dembroski Centre for Horticulture. The new roof has decreased storm-water discharge by 37% and, once drained into a rainwater cistern, it can provide an efficient water supply for the site irrigation system.
Health Award (ACE Bakery)
Dufferin Grove Organic Farmers' Market
Dufferin Grove Organic Farmers' Market provides a year-round sales venue for local organic farmers. The market offers the community food that contains no synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, while also reducing the environmental impact of shipping and helping to conserve valuable farmland surrounding Toronto.
Leadership Award (Toronto Community Foundation)
Environmental Defence
Environmental Defence is a national charity that protects the environment and human health. Concerned about the effects of poorly planned urban growth, declining air quality, disappearing forests and farmland, and loss of wildlife, the organization's successful Greenbelt campaign provides new protection for the headwaters of Toronto's rivers and improves the quality of life for all Torontonians.
Market Transformation Award (Perfectly Natural)
Bullfrog Power
Bullfrog Power sources its electricity from wind and low-impact hydro facilities that inject clean power onto the Ontario grid, reducing the need for electricity from polluting sources. Since its launch in 2005, Bullfrog Power has offset electricity that would otherwise have produced approximately 1,389 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Water Efficiency Award (Toronto Water)
Upper Canada College
As part of a commitment to become a "Green School for the 21st Century," Upper Canada College (UCC) collaborated with the
City of Toronto's WaterSaver Program for Schools. In doing so, UCC has minimized its impact on the municipal water system. It has reduced combined sewer overload by maximizing the infiltration of storm water on campus. UCC also introduced waterless urinals, low-flow taps and opportunities for students to learn life-long skills for practising environmental stewardship.
Youth Award (TD Bank Financial Group)
Jackman Avenue Public School Green Team
The Jackman Green Team has worked to make Jackman Avenue Public School a greener, more energy-efficient educational
environment. Students educate each other and the adults in their lives while adopting green habits for a lifetime. School-wide projects include a student-managed recycling and composting program, a litter-less lunch program,
an energy-conservation drive and extensive school-yard greening.
Environmental Achievement Award
Exhibition Place is also being recognized with an Environmental
Achievement Award for making this popular venue more energy efficient. Their focus on sustainable development and environmental initatives has helped to green its 192-acre site.
