About the awards

Who is eligible for an award?
Any person, project, initiative or company may be nominated for an award provided that they reside in Toronto and/or contribute directly to the greening of the City of Toronto. Please read the complete list of eligibility requirements.

What are the benefits of being nominated?
There are many benefits - for you and others - to participating in the Awards. In addition to public recognition and publicity so others may learn from and be inspired by your project, finalists in each category will be featured at the Green Living Show.

The Award winners will:

  • receive a prestigious Green Toronto Award
  • receive $5,000 to further their work on the environment or donate to a registered charity of their choice
  • be recognized at a public awards ceremony and be profiled on the City of Toronto's website
  • be profiled by Toronto media.

Who may make a nomination? May I nominate myself or my own company?
Anyone may make a nomination. Individuals, groups and companies may nominate themselves or be nominated by another party.

What is the deadline for submitting a nomination?
Nominations will be accepted until 11:59 pm on February 6, 2012.

When will the finalists be announced?
The three finalists in each award category will be announced in mid-March.

What are the criteria on which a nomination will be judged?
In order to be properly assessed, a thorough and detailed nomination is required. Learn more about the criteria.

What makes a good nomination?
Tell us your story in 1,500 words or less, and be sure to complete all the required fields on the nomination form. In general, it is better to provide more information than less; it is difficult for the judges to assess nominations with insufficient or incomplete information. Please review the judging criteria to learn more about what the judges look for in a nomination.

May I apply in more than one award category?
No, you may only apply in one award category.

If I win, are there restrictions on the use of the $5,000 award?
The cash award, donated by the award sponsors, may be used to further your work on the environment, and in the case of youth to further your education. Or, you may donate the funds to a registered charity of your choice. You will be asked to disclose how the money is spent.

If I won an award in the past, may I apply again next year?
Previous winners of Green Toronto Awards are eligible to reapply provided they have not won in the past three years. (To apply for a 2012 award, you must not have won in 2009, 2010 or 2011.)

If I don't win an award this year, may I compete again next year?
Yes, all nominees and finalists who do not win an award may enter again in subsequent years. However, they must be able to demonstrate progress on their initiative since their last submission.
