There are 16 hectares (40 acres) of parks and open space designated in the original Harbourfront Implementation Agreement. Of this total, approximately 10 hectares (25 acres) have existing uses that are provided for by way of lease arrangements or other agreements. The intent of this process is to concentrate design efforts on those sites that remain undeveloped or underdeveloped, and are available for improvement within the next five years.
In addition to the distinct sites outlined below, there are elements of the plan that connect all sites. These elements include the Waters Edge Promenade, a 7.0 metre (23 feet) wide continuous edge along the harbour wall that spans the length of the Harbourfront Parks and Open Space System.
There are a number of completed parks in the Harbourfront Parks and Open Space System that are critical components in the development of a cohesive parks strategy for Harbourfront. While these parks do not require redevelopment, any strategy for completing Harbourfront must integrate these park parcels with new park development and programming initiatives.
For purposes of this project, both the general Study Area and the specific sites are outlined on the Context Map (link to 'the sites at a glance' map or have this map displayed on this page). The major parcels of parkland to be addressed as components of the open space system include, but are not limited to:
BATHURST QUAY

SPADINA QUAY

MAPLE LEAF QUAY

JOHN AND YORK QUAYS (HARBOURFRONT CENTRE)
