  Western Gap

Aerial view of Fort YorkThe Western Gap forms the south limit of Bathurst Quay. An engineered deep-water channel between the Quay and the Toronto Islands Airport, the Western Gap is a key channel for shipping activities in Toronto's port, as well as for other marine and boating uses.

To the south of the Gap, the Toronto City Centre Airport (TCCA) is currently being used as a smaller regional airport for propeller-driven aircraft. Redevelopment of this section of the Water's Edge Promenade is complicated by the TCCA ferry crossing point along the Western Gap, a critical access point for users of the Airport. Recent proposals for expansion of the TCCA have included the development of a 'fixed-link" vehicular bridge, connecting the foot of Bathurst Street with the island.

The Airport forms the western portion of the Toronto Islands, a key recreational amenity for residents of Toronto that can be accessed only by ferry. The Toronto Islands total over 240 hectares (600 acres) of parkland, and include a small residential community, boating activities, and naturalized areas.

The Water's Edge Promenade is largely undeveloped along the Western Gap, and requires investment in both dockwall remediation and landscape treatment. Any investment along the Western Gap would include making connections west to the National Yacht Club and Alexandra Yacht Clubs.

Although complicated by land-ownership issues, the City is interested in looking conceptually at creative ways to better integrate these lands within the Harbourfront parks and open space system, and to take advantage of the opportunities provided along this stretch of the water's edge.
