Smog! Traffic jams! Rising gas prices! No room to bicycle! These are just a few reasons why we should all reduce the amount that we drive. Paying attention to fuel efficiency can also help reduce vehicle emissions.
Don’t forget to check out the Livegreen listing of energy saving programs and organizations to help you reach your reduction targets.
Tips to reduce energy use on the road
Reduce vehicle emissions by:
- Keeping your tires properly inflated; check your tire pressure at least twice a month and add air when needed
- Keeping your engine properly tuned
- Taking your time speeding up and slowing down
- Choosing an energy-efficient vehicle; larger cars and engines often burn more fuel and cost more money to run
- Limiting the amount you idle-your engine - it wastes gas and creates air pollution; it is also against the law to idle your car for more than three minutes in the City of Toronto
Reduce vehicle use by:
- Carpooling - share a ride to work, school or to events
- Using public transit - take the bus, streetcar, subway or GO Train
- Walking and biking - use your legs for great exercise
- Teleworking - work from home even once a month and make a difference
- Trip chaining - combine errands into one journey rather than making several separate car trips
