To date, the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, also referred to as bird flu, has not been found in North America. The virus is present in both birds and humans in a number of countries in Asia, Europe and Africa.
Toronto Public Health is working closely with the provincial and federal governments and with hospitals and physicians to ensure that appropriate monitoring for respiratory illnesses is in place.
