Public Health Champion Awards

Nominations for the 2010 Public Health Champion Awards are now closed.

Nominations open: Wednesday, May 12, 2010
Nominations close:Wednesday, June 30, 2010
Award ceremony:Fall 2010

Eligibility requirements

  • There are two award categories:
    • Individual (must be a resident of Toronto)
    • Organization (must be located in Toronto)
  • Current and former members of the Board of Health and current and retired Toronto Public Health staff are not eligible for this award.
  • Nominations must be received by Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

Nomination process

To submit a nomination, a nomination form must be completed and supported by:

  • a letter of nomination
  • a profile of the nominee
  • two letters of support
Nominations can be sent by fax or mail to the address provided on the nomination form.

Selection process

Nominations will be reviewed and judged by a sub-committee of the Board of Health, including three members of the Board of Health and one representative from each of the four Local Health Committees.

Recipients will be selected based on demonstrated achievements in one or more of the following four areas:

  1. Providing leadership in efforts to reduce health inequalities. For example:
    • advocating for public policies that address determinants of health
    • contributing to the expansion of public health evidence and knowledge base
  2. Fostering collaboration to improve the health of the population. For example:
    • strengthening partnerships across sectors and among diverse groups
    • developing knowledge exchange strategies to promote awareness and deepen commitments to public health
  3. Building community capacity through innovative health promotion strategies. For example:
    • advancing new approaches to cross-cultural communications
    • empowering marginalized and vulnerable populations
  4. Achieving impact by acting as a catalyst for positive change. For example:
    • mobilizing resources to respond to an emerging public health issue
    • affecting improvements to public health indicators or outcomes
The decisions of the selection committee will be final. Award recipients will be notified in October 2010 and will be honoured at a ceremony in the fall of 2010.
