Indoor tanning equipment, such as tanning beds, booths and lamps, causes skin cancer
Indoor tanning usage is directly linked to melanoma skin cancer
Ultraviolet rays (UVR) from tanning beds can be up to five times more intense than the noon-day sun
Every time you tan your odds increase. If you are under 30 and you use indoor tanning equipment, you have a 75% greater risk of developing melanoma (the most fatal kind of skin cancer) than someone who has never used this equipment
If you are under age 18, the World Health Organization, Canadian Cancer Society, and Canadian Dermatology Association strongly recommend avoiding using any indoor tanning equipment. It’s especially important if you have:
large numbers of moles (nevi)
pale skin that doesn’t tan, tends to freckle, or burns easily
a history of frequent childhood sunburn
Tanning salon operators are supposed to display a UV warning sign. In most Toronto tanning salons this sign is not visible. Check if information or warnings about the risks of tanning is provided to customers. Also check the qualifications and training of the person selling and operating the indoor tanning service
