 About the CDSU
The Communicable Disease Surveillance Unit (CDSU) is the program within Toronto Public Health's Communicable Disease Control (CDC) service responsible for monitoring communicable diseases in Toronto.

 What is surveillance?

Surveillance is an essential part of communicable disease control and prevention, which includes the following components:

  • Monitoring disease trends;
  • Monitoring the progress of disease control objectives;
  • Estimating the size of a health problem;
  • Detecting outbreaks of infectious disease;
  • Evaluating interventions and preventive programs; and
  • Identifying research needs.
